Lady Cougars get big win over Byne on Senior Night

The Lady Cougars took to the court on Friday night for senior night against Byne, where the Lady Cougars proved to be unstoppable, winning 62-24.

The team had a huge first quarter, scoring 25 points, while only holding Byne to two points.

Senior Mary Glenn Warr led the team throughout the entire game. However, she dominated in the first quarter, scoring 12 points. The showstopper made two 3-pointers, along with several other shots.

She was followed up by fellow senior, Lainey McRae, who scored six points and Ella Harrell, who scored four points. Zoe Wells finished out the quarter with a 3-pointer.

Headed into the second quarter, the Lady Cougars continued to put numbers on the board, adding 17 more points to their total, while Byne added six.

Katherine Griffin led the team in points for the second quarter, scoring six points. She was followed up by Chloe Brogdon, who scored four points. Wells once again nailed a 3-pointer, before Kassidy Widner and Warr added 2 points.

Headed into halftime, the Lady Cougars led 42-8.

Coming out of the half, the Lady Cougars scored 12 points.

Wells led with three points, while Harrell, McRae, Widner and Brogdon all contributed two points. Warr ended the quarter by making a free throw shot.

In the final quarter of the game, the Lady Cougars slowed things down, scoring only 8 points, while Byne had their highest scoring quarter of the night with 9 points.

McRae and Harrell each ended their senior night with four points made in the final quarter.
Head Coach Lance Godwin was proud of the team’s win.

“Everybody got to play, so that was a great thing for us,” he said.

The Lady Cougars will now turn their attention toward region playoffs, where Godwin has high hopes.

“This group of girls, we have a high chance of playing for the region championship,” he said. “We finished as #1 seed during our season, so we drew a bye for the first round and we have already qualified for state.”

They will play Thursday, February 10 at 3:30 p.m. against Covenant Academy at Central Fellowship Christian Academy. If they win, the Lady Cougars will then compete in the region championship the following night.
