Donalsonville resident Herman Levi Carter, Jr. passed away after a short illness in Dothan, Alabama, on December 4, 2021, at the age of 74. Herman was born on August 10, 1947, in Macon, Georgia. His parents, Herman L. and Willie Maude Carter, Sr. and brothers, Delmar and Louie Burkes preceded him in death and welcomed him to his heavenly home. His brother, Donald Burkes and sister, Cookie (Lee) Singletary presently live in Warner Robins, Georgia.

Herman joined the United States Marine Corp after his 1967 graduation from Northside High School in Warner Robins, Georgia. He served as a Lieutenant Corporal with the Third Division, Ninth Battalion, facing battle in Vietnam where he was wounded six times, earning three purple hearts and a Presidential Unit citation.  Additionally, he received a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one star, Combat Action Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal.

Herman leaves a rich legacy to include the love of his life, Linda S. Carter, son, Mike Carter, daughters, April (John) Cantrell, and Lori (Chris) Belle Isle. He was deeply loved by his grandchildren Garrett (Page) Carter, Shelby (David) Bacon, Caroline (Nic) Bowman, Josh Belle Isle, Brandon Mullikin, Matthew Mullikin, Marley (Chris) Kennedy, Seth Cantrell and three great grandchildren, Brandon Mullikin, Aden Mullikin and Lydia Bowman.

Services to honor Herman will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at the Cadwell Chapel of Cox Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Jeff Spicer will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service. A burial will be held Friday, December 10, at 11:00 a.m., Glynn Haven Memorial Gardens, Macon, Georgia, with full military honors.

Herman was a faithful member of the Masonic Lodge #267 in Donalsonville, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the organization he loved and held dear, the Masonic Home of Georgia, P.O. Box 4183, Macon, GA 31208.
