The City of Bainbridge was recently awarded a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, designated for street and drainage improvements. These grants are competitive, and any city that applies must list a specific project and have a minimum 20% match.

According to city manager Chris Hobby, these funds will be used to upgrade the city’s storm water infrastructure. “This project will focus on Thronateeska and Boulevard, between Shotwell and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive,” he told the Post-Searchlight. “Our long term goal is to continue west with these drainage improvement projects until we get to the downtown area, but this is not a downtown project.” He further elaborated, “Instead, we are attempting to upgrade the oldest storm water infrastructure in the city. Each project will be maxed out at approximately $1 million.”

According to Hobby, these CDBG grants are distributed down from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to the Department of Community Affairs, and are intended for the benefit of low to moderate-income families.
