Peggy King, age 90, formerly of Bainbridge and Colquitt, passed away May 19, 2021 at her residence in Peachtree Corners, Ga. Peggy was born to Hoke and Flossie Phillips on August 13, 1930, in Colquitt, Ga. Peggy was raised on a farm just outside of Colquitt. She attended GA State Woman’s College in Valdosta. Later, she worked as a dental assistant at Southern Airways Air base in Bainbridge, where she met the love of her life, John C. Powell.
While raising her four children, Peggy sold Avon and did substitute teaching. Her hobbies were sewing, reading, cross-stitch, and genealogy. She also loved music and dancing. In 1979, she and her husband, John opened a store in Colquitt called Flowers,etc, where she worked until 1994.
She moved to Bainbridge in 1999 to help care for her grandchildren. She attended the First United Methodist Church and also volunteered at Memorial Hospital.
Peggy authored and published two books: A Phillips Family History and The Crossroads (a memoir).
Peggy is survived by her children: Debbe Wilson of Dunwoody, Ga., Stephen (Mary) Powell of Dunwoody, David Powell of Atlanta, Ga., Lauren (Berry) Rentz of Bainbridge, and grandchildren: Kyle (Emilia) Berry of Lloyd Harbor, NY, Alex (Laura Barber) Rentz of Alpharetta, Ga., Evan Rentz of Cary, NC, Aleyna Rentz of Baltimore, MD, Connor Rentz of Statesboro, Ga., Rachel, Bethany and Rosie Rentz of Bainbridge, and two great-grandsons: Ian Berry of Ft. Benning, Ga. and Sebastian Berry of Lloyd Harbor, NY.
The family is planning a private graveside service.
