The Decatur County Commissioners met Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM, for their regularly appointed meeting. The main talking point on the agenda was the Georgia Department of Transportation contract for a fuel farm at the airport. The original estimated cost was found to be off by thousands of dollars, with the total cost now being roughly $604,312. Federal funding will cover 90% of the first payment on the project, and state funding will cover an additional 5%. A federal grant will cover 90% of the second payment on the project, which will include removing the current underground tanks, and installing two 12,000 gallon tanks, one for Jet A fuel, and the other for 100 low-lead fuel. All in all, this project should cost the county less than $50,000.

This new fuel station will provide 24/7 service for pilots. “We will continue to serve from our fuel trucks, but this will provide service for pilots who want to do self-service,” County Administrator Alan Thomas told the Post Searchlight. “That airport does more for the county than most people know,” Chairman Pete Stephens said in an interview.

The vote to approve the contract passed. The project is expected to take 60 days, with Croy Engineering in charge of the construction.
