Cougars beat RFM, Highland

The GCA Cougars volleyball team hosted Robert F. Munroe at home on Thursday, where the Cougars won in two sets.

The Cougars won the first set 25-15 and the second set 25-16.

Junior Lainey McRae was on fire on Thursday. She had eight kills throughout the night, while sophomore Mallorie Jordan had four. Hannah Friedman, Josie McConnell, Isabella Barnett, Lollie Gay, Kat Griffin and Kassidy Widner all had one kill throughout the sets.

McRae also nailed it while serving, she had five aces, while Friedman and Savannah McConnell had three. Barnett served two aces, while Mary Glenn Warr, Gay, Griffin and Widner all served one.

The team couldn’t have won without the assists made by Warr, who had eight and Josie, who had six.

The team was excited with their win and headed off to play to Highland Christian Academy the following day, where they won in four sets, 25-18, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21.

McRae had multiple kills again throughout the night. She had 10 kills overall, while junior Ella Harrell had eight, Griffin had six, Jordan had five, Barnett had three and Warr had one.

Eighth grader, Savannah really stepped up when it came to serving. She had five aces, while Jordan and Josie had four, Widner had three, and McRae had one.

Warr had 16 assists throughout the game, making sure the team had a successful win.

“The girls had some fire in their hearts for this game,” Coach Deanna Canfield said. “They remember how it felt at Highland’s gym and they were really determined in practice; we prepared a game plan and the girls executed that plan perfectly.

Canfield is proud of how much the team has grown since their first loss at Highland.

“I am absolutely proud of how this team has grown and how strong minded they are to get better every single day,” she said. “It’s been a great season.”

The team will play again on Monday, October 5, at home at 6 p.m.
