The Decatur County School System finished their meals to go program this week. They will now take a one-week hiatus before they begin their summer feeding program with a new company that delivers meals to students.

Typically the summer feeding program offers meals to summer school students, along with a few walkups, but this new program, Meals -To -You delivers meals to any student in Decatur County who needs it.

Superintendent Tim Cochran heard about the program through the Early County School System, who used it while the school was shut down during the pandemic.

Cochran then approached the program, which accepted Decatur County for the month of June.

Since the approval, Cochran has rapidly been signing up families for the meal deliveries. The program delivers 10 days worth of meals that are shelf safe products, which are then reimbursed by the USDA.

Because the program delivers 10 days worth of products, students and families will no longer have to travel to a designated location each afternoon. The program will knock on their door, deliver the meal and return two or three times later in the month.

Cochran said the meals will be just as quality as what they would usually serve. He listed items such as chicken salad, hummus, fruit snacks and vegetables as some of the things children would receive in their deliveries.

Cochran said they have already signed up more families than they would typically see walk up during the summer and he hopes this program will be successful for everyone involved.
