Two fishermen were saddened and shocked on Tuesday, May 5 when Bainbridge Public Safety officers had them help retrieve a body from the water after a man jumped off Calhoun Street Bridge, committing suicide.

BPS officers Luke McConnell and Jason Hayes were dispatched after a witness saw a man jump off the bridge.

Witness, Aaron Hall said he was driving his vehicle when he saw the subject, later identified as Anthony Bogan, standing on the north side of the bridge. Hall said at that time Bogan had one leg over the bridge and one leg still on the road.

Hall stopped his vehicle in the roadway and began to yell stop, but said before he could get out of the vehicle Bogan jumped.

Officers tried to locate Bogan in Cheney Griffin Park, due to the water flowing south. They then noticed Bogan body’s face down in the river.

McConnell saw a boat passing by and recognized the two men as Hunter Bennett and Nicholas Boyett and asked if they could help.

Boyett and Bennett retrieved Bogan’s body and brought him back to the Flint River’s Edge, where he was placed in an ambulance and Coroner Kenny Hollis pronounced Bogan dead upon arrival.

“It was the last thing I expected to happen when I went fishing,” Boyett said. “I just hated to see something like that happen to him and his family.”

Boyett and Bennett offer their condolences to the family, as investigators seek to find out what caused Bogan to end his own life.
