The Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District (Flint River SWCD) is pleased to announce the 2020 Stewardship Poster Contest theme: “Where Would We BEE Without Pollinators”.

Pollinators are critical to agriculture and healthy ecosystems, but have shown signs of decline in recent years. This year’s poster contest encourages students to explore the importance of pollinators and pollinator habitats to our environment and food systems.

This year’s Stewardship Week, a national campaign led by the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD), will be celebrated April 26 to May 3, 2020 across the nation. Stewardship Week is a fun and educational learning experience for all students while promoting natural resource conservation. The Flint River SWCD believes that educating our youth on the benefits of conservation is key to empowering the next generation of environmental stewards. This year marks the 65th anniversary of NACD’s Stewardship Week, which focuses on one of five stewardship topics each year—water, soil, habitat, forestry, and a topic of interest—which determines the annual theme.

In addition to providing area schools with valuable conservation and natural resource learning materials for this year’s Stewardship Week theme, the Flint River SWCD is offering an annual poster contest for 1st  through 5th grade students from counties located in the District. Counties include Baker, Calhoun, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Miller, Mitchell, and Seminole. Posters must incorporate the “Where Would We BEE Without Pollinators” theme. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, to maintain Center for Disease Control social distancing protocol, a digital photograph of the front of the poster and entry form will be accepted. Please email the photos to abby@flintriverswcd.org by Thursday, April 30, 2020.  A first, second, and third place prize will be awarded from each county worth $50, $30, and $20 respectively.

The top winner from each county will advance to the District competition. The District winner will receive a $150 award and will be submitted to the state competition where it will be judged against other posters from across Georgia. If you are interested in participating in the poster contest and would like additional information, please visit http://flintriverswcd.org/poster-contest-guidelines or contact Abby Davis at (229) 849-2415 or abby@flintriverswcd.org.
