With COVID-19, an unprecedented national emergency, increasing rapidly in communities across the country, The Salvation Army Bainbridge Service Center has significantly amplified its preparation for this evoloving outbreak, and has ramped up efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus and ensure service, especially among the homeless and other vulnerable populations.

On the local level, “we have closed our Family Store operations temporarily and we have discontinued accepting donations of goods at this time,”stated Director, Merreann McDonald.  We are keeping our complete staff on board during this time and are keeping them busy assisting where needed.  Our Social Service office is open and busier than ever.  We are available for Food Assistance Monday through Friday, 10 a.m to 12 p.m. at our Conference Room Entrance.  For any needs other than food, we ask clients to call our office to set up an appointment.  We have procedures in place to protect our staff and our clients while offering assistance.  Ensuring the safety of those who depend on Salvation Army programs and services, along with the safety of staff and volunteers, is of utmost priority.

While everyone is being impacted by this coronavirus pandemic, the individuals experiencing homelessness will feel the effects quicker and more significantly. Although people experiencing homelessness can be more isolated, they also tend to have chronic medical issues and severely lack access to proper hygiene, updated information, medical resources, and care.

Additionally, the people living in poverty may be severely impacted. Several industries are at risk of financial hardship, such as travel and hospitality. The Salvation Army Bainbridge Service Center anticipates a significant increase in emergency assistance for low-wage employees who may be temporarily laid off due to the coronavirus.

With an expected spike in requests over the coming weeks, months, and potentially years, on going public support will be needed to help ensure that services are available to existing and new vulnerable populations. David Hudson, National Commander of The Salvation Army, stated, “Millions of Americans were already living paycheck to paycheck, and they will likely face incredible challenges from these uncertain times.  Across the country, The Salvation Army is committed to serving those who need help, and we are thankful for generous public support with will allow that to happen.”
