Starting in 2020, the Bainbridge Humane Society began a policy whereby they will  accept owner surrendered pets by appointment only. Shelter Director Ashley White says, “We strongly encourage people with found animals to call and make an appointment as well, if it is not an emergency.”

The new policy is meant to improve service, not only for the animals in shelter care, but the people within the community, as well.

White says it will ensure that a staff member is available to go through the process of getting all the important information about the pet being surrendered. This may   increase the odds that it will be adopted to the appropriate home. It also helps the surrendering person know what to expect when coming in and having all the information, such as the animal’s veterinary medical records, available. They can also better schedule their own day.

The shelter will be happy to provide the needed forms so they may be filled out prior to the appointment via email, fax, website, or in-person pickup. Appointments will be made as space and time allow; but always having in mind accommodating the needs of the person surrendering their pet.

“We do not charge a set relinquish fee, only ask for a donation that is within your means,” explains White. “This will help offset the overhead cost of in-taking and caring for the animal.”

In addition to veterinary records, persons must bring a valid photo ID with them.

“Managed intake has been proven to better serve animals, as well as people, and our goal is to provide the best care for the animals at our facility and quality service to the members of our community,” said White. She adds “A lot of places that have begun this process say it can take a couple of years for the community to get adjusted to it.”
