Decatur County Fire and Rescue’s goal has always been to give back to the community. Through their mission, they have created a way to offer a free EMT- B Course that will only charge fees for uniforms and testing materials. They believe this will not only create a more affordable pathway for students interested in this service, but also help with the massive shortage of EMTs nationwide.

Decatur County Fire and Rescue teaches EMT classes in house to their officers, and wanted to invite the public to join in on these classes in a way that is not monetarily demanding, officer Jamie Earp said.

Earp knows how difficult it can be to afford these classes, especially if someone is already involved in a program that they aren’t happy in, which is why he strived to make this accessible for everyone.

Although the class will be more monetarily feasible for students, Earp said the class will still set the educational standard; there will be no shortcuts taken.

“This will not be less than what’s out there,” Earp said. “We have such a high standard set; if they can’t leave that classroom and treat my child, then they aren’t leaving as a licensed provider.”

The class will be open to anyone who wants an educational pathway, but they must pass a background check and a drug test.

The class will be held two times a week from mid April to mid August at Decatur County Fire and Rescue, with a deadline to register of March 13.

The class would not be possible without the help of South Georgia EMS, who will help with the educational side or Dr. Jerry Phillips of Bainbridge, who will stand as the medical director of the program.

“Dr. Phillips was completely sold on the program and didn’t bat an eye,” Earp said. “We are so thankful for his help.”

With their help, the program will have the most up-to-date- information and help students pursue excellence in the field of EMT education, while still teaching the necessary skills to conserve life, alleviate suffering and promote health.
