The Bainbridge wrestling team traveled to Cairo last Saturday to compete in the annual Syrupmaker Classic. The cats were 1 of 9 teams which included Valdosta, Tift, University Christian out of Camden, Leon, Cairo, TCC and Cook. The Cats finished with seven out of 10 weight classes in the top four. Daniel Cofty, Kendall Glover, Adam Pascual, Hunter Harris, and Hunter Griffin all finished 4th with Josh Fillingame finishing 3rd and senior Arkeavious Marshall taking home 1st place for the 195 class.

“I’m continually being impressed with Josh Fillingame’s growth on the mat as a 9th grader,” said coach Chad Smith. “I’m looking for him to finish out the season in the top two at region and hopefully making a run at qualifying for the state finals. Arkeavious is no stranger to success in wrestling considering he is a returning state qualifier and is the favorite to win the 220-pound region title this year for 5A.”

The cats not only competed yesterday but they also served their community by chaperoning at the annual Special Olympics Snowflake Ball. With an hour between returning from competition and the start of the ball, the guys held tight to their commitment to Coach Smith to be a part of this special event.

“It’s important to me as a coach that my team know how to do more than just win,” said Smith. “They need to be winners outside the gym as well. I hope by the time they leave me that they know more about life, serving others and what commitment really means. They didn’t let me down. They chaperoned and danced the night away helping others to smile and have the time of their life. I’m super proud of each one of them.”
