Some of you may recall a column I wrote last year on a particularly touchy subject in the Methodist Church. I discussed how the church was considering dividing into two separate groups, based on their differences in how to handle or broach the subject of homosexuality. At the time of the column, the votes had not been cast yet and my biggest hope was that the church would remain strong in their faith and continue to spread God’s word as one body.

However, in light of recent events, the Methodist Church has proposed to split into more than one denomination. They will likely be known as the progressives and the traditionalists.

Their message will remain the same- God loves all His children with open arms, and He washes away our sins when we ask for forgiveness.

I will be the first to admit that church can be difficult for anyone to walk into when they feel as if they have done something indecent or sinful. For a while, I felt like a fraud even being there. I wasn’t being the same person in the church as I was outside the church, and that’s not what we vow to be. But, the rules didn’t change for me; I made the decision to act the way I did, and I believe homosexuality is a choice.

I know many people will say it’s not, but until science can prove otherwise I have to believe this.

Science and religion have never gone hand in hand. There are things in the Bible that are scientifically impossible and things in science that don’t add up with the way the Bible depicts creation. However, most people tend to lean towards one or the other. But, when it comes to homosexuality the Bible has said in numerous chapters it is wrong, and more or less it is a choice and science has also viewed it as a choice. There is no proof to this day that one is born that way. So, my question to the church is how you can split over this debate, when it is a clear choice they are making to sin?

This new “denomination” is now catering to a particular group of sinners that we give more attention to than the rest, and it really makes me sad.

Many of you know, I work at Morningside Baptist Church in the nursery and when I heard about this I brought it up to my Pastor, Brother Jimmy Dean. He provided with me Romans 1, particularly verse 26-27.

“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.”

The chapter later goes on to say, those men know that these acts are reprehensible, but take pleasure in them and do them anyway.

I’m not a Pastor, I would hardly even call myself a disciple some days, but while I’m sad that my church plans to split; I hope in some way that with other like minded people, the new denomination can converse on what they are doing openly, and see it for what it is.

It is a sin, but not one bigger or smaller than anyone else’s; you are still my brother and sister in Christ and I’ll love you either way.
