Decatur County middle school 4-H’ers Samantha Floyd, Rachel Hayes and Kinsey Ward attended the Life 101 Retreat at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia on May 18-19, 2018.
Besides an overnight stay on a college campus, students also took part in classes related to financial literacy. Through hands-on activities and games, they learned about debit and credit cards, money budgeting, taxes and calculating interest. Perhaps the most eye-opening experiences for the 4-H’ers were the financial issues and problems that they encountered as they participated in the Game of Life simulation.
Multiple counties throughout the 4-H Southwest District attended the workshop and each attendee was required to present a self-created piggy bank as part of entry into the program. Samantha Floyd won the 7th grade Piggy Bank contest and Kinsey Ward received the most votes in the People’s Choice category.
4-H’ers also participated in community service projects and recreation as well as touring Andrew College campus.
