Bainbridge tennis grabs first place in region

Tuesday afternoon the Bearcats and Lady Bearcats faced off against Northview High. The Lady Bearcats came out victorious 6-2, while the Bearcats fell short 8-0.

The Lady Bearcats shook up the lineup this week, with Megan Meszaros playing singles. She showed her talent for both doubles and singles by winning 10-3. Her usual teammate, Sarah Caroline Darley also showed her strength in singles, winning 10-4.

Singles player, Piper Loeffler lost her match 5-10, but the team quickly bounced back with Anna Marie Hall winning, 10-0. Gracie Surratt finished singles play, dominating 10-1.

Doubles team, Bree Powell and Jade Stacey, had a close match and won against Northview High 10-5. Madison Wiggins and teammate, Piper Harrell played hard, but came up short 3-10 in their match. However, Sydnee Burke and Mikey Harrell, who usually play singles, showed their versatility and won the final doubles match 10-4.

The Bearcats struggled against their opponents and faced a tough loss.

Doubles team, Ben Mitchell and Jacob McLaughlin held the game the longest, losing 4-10. Other doubles team members, Barrette Jackson and Cole Buchanan, Mark Loeffler and Hudson Barber lost 0-10.

Eager to make a comeback, singles player, Jacob Reynolds scored two points against his opponent, but lost 2-10. Blake Lowe lost 0-10, along with Robert Shockley. Austin Aldridge managed to score two points and lost 2-10. Dalton Savage and Lawson Humphrey also managed to score a point and lost 1-10.

Coach Amy Thomas was not disappointed in the boys though.

“We had a good time and played good tennis; sometimes you just get outmatched that far,” she said.

Thomas noted Northview High boy’s team is ranked number one in Alabama.

“They are truly a great team, ”Thomas said. “They will go far and deep in competition.”

The Bearcats and Lady Bearcats continued their competition on the road Wednesday, when they won their last region match against Veterans High.

Singles, Mikey Harrell started off on a high note, winning 6-0, 6-0. Sydnee Burke followed up with a win of her own, 6-1, 6-3. Gracie Surratt finished singles play with a win of 6-2, 6-2.

Number one doubles team, Jade Stacey and Bree Powell won their matchup 6-1, 6-1 and watched as their teammates Piper Harrell and Madison Wiggins kept up their winning streak with a win of 6-1, 6-2.

The Bearcats came out on top with Robert Shockley getting a double bagel over Veterans, followed up by Mark Loefller winning 6-0, 6-1.

Number one doubles team, Cole Buchanan and Hudson Barber won 6-4, 7-5, while Lawson Humphrey and Jacob McLaughlin lost in a close match of 4-6, 2-6. But, the real shining moment came in Dalton Savage’s nail bighting game, where he won 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

The Bearcats are seeded number one as they finish region play.
