John E. Bayides

John E. Bayides, age 94, of Attapulgus. Georgia, died December 7, 2017, in the presence of his loving family at Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia.

John was born to Efstatheos and Irene Bayides on March 31, 1923, in Boston, Massachusetts. He travelled the world as a Merchant Marine during and after World War II. John married the love of his life, Martha Tapas, on January 10, 1942. He and Martha moved from New York City to Attapulgus in 1948, where John worked as an engineer for Engelhard Corporation, retiring in 1986.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Martha T. Bayides, and his son, John James Bayides. He is survived by his grandchildren, Lynn (Tim) and John D., his daughter in law, Norma, brother, Charles, sister, Dorothy, and three great-grandchildren, Courtney, Regan and Brock. His love was Martha and his family and his passion was painting. John was a prolific artist, completing over 2000 paintings. He was a member of the Decatur County Artists’ Guild and a member of the Attapulgus Baptist Church.

At his request, John will be buried in a private ceremony beside his wife and son at Attapulgus Baptist Cemetery.
