“[The truck] was disabled in the right hand lane and for unknown reasons [the van] struck [the truck] in the rear,” Landrum said.

Landrum said that the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but that it has been determined that Whitehead never braked before hitting the truck although he had plenty of site distance.

A reconstruction team was called to the site to assist in the investigation, which is still open pending a final coroner’s report and analysis of the crash details.

Georgia State Patrol, Decatur County Sheriff’s Office and other emergency response services responded to a brutal two-vehicle accident on Hwy. 27 South Friday afternoon.

A white minivan traveling northbound on Hwy. 27 collided into the rear of an 18-wheeler, causing traffic to backup and create minor delays on the highway. The cause of the wreck was unapparent to Law Enforcement Officers at the time, and an accident reconstruction team was to be brought in to determine some of the details.
