Property owners all over Decatur County paid their taxes on Dec. 20.

But who were the biggest taxpayers this year?

Southern Company led 2016 with a staggering $2.3 million in property taxes. The construction of the two solar panel projects in Decatur County were expected to have a significant impact on the county’s tax rolls, and it followed through in flying colors.

BASF Catalysts LLC in Attapulgus was the second biggest taxpayer, paying just more than $1 million.

The Georgia Power Company added $794,212.50 to the tax rolls in 2016.

Shaw Industries was fourth, with $401,748.50 paid in property taxes.

Sanfillippo was the fifth highest taxpayer in 2016 with $234,601.38 paid.

Meredian Bioplastics was sixth with $234,414.53 in taxes paid in 2016.

Engelhard Corp was the seventh highest taxpayer at $175,610.25 paid.

The eighth highest taxpayer of 2016 was CSX Transportation Inc. with $172,156.01 paid in taxes.

Coming in at the ninth highest taxpayer in 2016 was Georgia Transmission with $167,045.53 paid.

The tenth highest taxpayer in 2016 was Danimer Bioplastics Inc, paying $132,837.21.

All of the top ten taxpayers combined for $5.6 million in taxes for Decatur County.
