Rev. David F. Long Jr., 84, of Lakeland, Fla., passed away Sunday, October 30, 2016, in Lakeland.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Chester Padgett, Rev. Cham McMillen, and Rev. Kenneth Cloud officiating. Interment will follow at Black Jack Baptist Church Cemetery with French Long, Jimmy Long, Andrew Strickland, Roger Meredith, Scott Harris, and Dan Starnes serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Wheeler, Clayton Penhallegon, Palmer Rich, Gordon Miller, and Jerry Pollock.

The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church prior to the funeral service, starting at 2 p.m. Online visitors may sign the guest register at

David was born June 15, 1932, in Bainbridge, Ga., the son of David French Long and Irene Peacock Long. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1954, and the Baptist College of Florida, Class of 1958. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Baraca Sunday School Class, and the Bowen Baptist Association. He served at the First Baptist Mission Church in 1958 and in Bagdad from 1958 to 1961. He was an interim minister at many churches in Southwest Georgia and Northwest Florida, and the former Chaplain at Riverside Place in Bainbridge and the Savannah Court in Lakeland.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary Long Strickland and her husband, Sammy, of Lakeland; his sisters, Mary Ruth Harris and her husband, Dan, of Arlington, Ga. and Beth Starnes of Rome, Ga.; his grandsons, David Aaron Strickland and his wife, Shelby, of Springhill, Florida and Michael Andrew Strickland and his wife, Laura of Ft. Carson, Colorado; his great-granddaughter, Gemma Reagan Strickland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Pope Long; and his brothers, Thomas P. Long and John Wheat Long.
