BHS girls’ soccer off to strong start

The Bainbridge High School Girls Varsity Soccer team kicked off their season last week and through three games are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the region.

The Lady Cats opened their season in Dothan against Northview High School. The Lady Cougars scored three goals in each half en-route to a 6-0 victory over the Lady Cats in the season opener.

Bainbridge’s second contest came against region foe Americus-Sumter, with the Lady Cats rebounding with a 6-0 win vs. the Lady Panthers in Americus last Friday night.

Bainbridge Junior Midfielders Haley Thompson, Summer Boyd, and Cara Jones each scored two goals in the contest.

In the 5th minute, Thompson intercepted a failed clearance ball and crossed a shot from the right side of the penalty area, scoring from 17 yards out to give the Lady Cats an early 1-0 lead. Jones scored the next two goals in the 19th minute and 39th minutes. Her first score was the result of a touch pass by junior Midfielder Mallory West that sent the ball in front of the goal. Jones quickly shot and converted for a score from six yards out. She scored her second goal, in the final minute of the first half, when she intercepted a pass and dribbled through several defenders scoring from 2 yards out to give Bainbridge a 3-0 halftime lead.

In the 43rd minute Thompson got behind the Lady Panther defense on a pass from Boyd and quickly scored from 5 yards out to increase the lead to 4-0.

Boyd scored Bainbridge’s fifth goal of the contest in the 49th minute when she lofted a shot to the center of the goal and just below the crossbar from thirty yards out. Thompson assisted on the goal.

The final score of the game came in the 53rd minute when Boyd’s free kick, from 25 yards away, found its way into the right side of the Americus-Sumter goal.

Bainbridge defeated Monroe Tuesday night, in a region contest, scoring six first half goals, in a 10-0 route in the home opener at Centennial field. Nine different Lady Cats scored for Bainbridge led by senior midfielder Sabryna Dean’s 2 goals and 1 assist.

In the 2nd minute sophomore Paige Stegall scored on a breakaway, for an early 1-0 lead. In the 5th minute junior midfielder Mallory West took a crossing pass from the left side by Dean, and scored from five yards out, giving Bainbridge a two goal advantage. Haley Thompson scored on a 24-yard free kick, in the 8th minute to extend the lead at 3-0. Sophomore defender Mary Mercer Reynolds dribbled her way through the Lady Tornadoes’ defense shooting from 16 yards out for the fourth goal in just the first 16 minutes. The final two goals of the first half came in the 36th and 39th minutes as Dean and senior Derrical Williams intercepted two Monroe passes and quickly shot and scored to give Bainbridge a 6-0 halftime lead.

The remaining goals scored in the contest came by Dean (48th minute), freshman Mabry Briggs (52nd minute), senior Alysha Stubbs (62nd minute.), and senior Jasmine Taylor (75th minute). Thompson, Summer Boyd, and Aida Diaz also picked up assists in the second half.
