The sentencing hearing date for three Decatur County Sheriff’s Office deputies originally scheduled for Dec. 10 has been moved to Dec. 29 at 10 a.m., by Court order.

Defendant Christopher Kines filed a motion on Oct. 13 requesting a rescheduling because his counsel, attorney Kermit Umbach of Albany, has a commitment to another trial on Dec. 10.

Kines, Elizabeth Croley and Robert Wade Umbach were found guilty in federal court in June on charges stemming from an incident at Bainbridge BikeFest 2012. An altercation between deputies and civilian Ronnie Aaron Parrish at the annual event led to an FBI investigation and a subsequent cover up by the DCSO officers.

Former DCSO captain Liz Croley was found guilty on two counts: Deprivation of Rights Under the Color of Law and False Reporting. The jury’s verdict was that Croley deprived Parrish’s rights to a fair criminal trial for his conduct at Bikefest by writing false reports.

Former DCSO deputy Robert Wade Umbach was found not guilty for False Reports, but found guilty for Tampering With Witness Evidence. Umbach was involved in the altercation with Parrish, but reported false information to FBI special agent Steve McDermott about Griffin, IV’s, involvement with Parrish.

Former DCSO deputy Christopher Kines was also charged with the same counts as Umbach. He was found not guilty for False Reports but found guilty for Tampering With Witness Evidence for the same reasons as Umbach.

Wiley Griffin, IV, a fourth defendant in the case, was found innocent on the charge of the Deprivation of Right Under the Color of Law.
