The Bainbridge High School Bass Cats bass fishing team qualified for the state championship with a strong second place finish in Saturday’s Georgia Bass National High School State Qualifying Tournament on Lake Seminole.
The Bass Cats, who are coached by Roy Matthews, have been competing for three years. The team of Blake Daughtry and Jake Jones finished a strong second with a catch of 12.69 pounds and a big fish of 4.69 pounds Saturday to qualify for the state high school bass fishing championship. Their boat captain was Lee Boutwell.
First place Saturday went to the Alexander High School team of Noah Regan and Wesley Butler with a catch of 13.04 pounds. The Mill Creek High School team of Thomas Zaczek and Dylan Parham were third with a catch of 10.62 pounds.
Saturday’s tournament on Lake Seminole was the first on the Georgia High School Bass Fishing trail. The top finishers at each tournament will qualify for the state championship.
Bass Cats coach Roy Mathews said he is proud of all his student anglers.
“We have several who are capable of being competitive,” he said. “Blake Daughtry and Jake Jones have a lot of experience fishing and have worked really hard to qualify for the state championship as ninth graders.”
