Living in a town without a movie theater as a cinephile

Movie award season is like my football season. It’s what I look forward to every year. I typically make a sport out of seeing all the potential award winners and scout out what my favorite directors, actors and other players are releasing.

It would be accurate to say the Academy Awards are my Superbowl. I always go to a viewing party, and friends and I always debate the winners of each category.

When I moved to Bainbridge last summer, I was pretty devastated to learn there was no movie theater here. I immediately Googled “theaters near Bainbridge, Georgia” and just found the address for the Bainbridge Little Theatre (cool, but not really what I’m looking for, Google). A little more digging led me to the realization that I would have to go to Tallahassee for movies. Sure, it’s not that long of a drive, but it would make those cheaper weeknight movies a little trickier considering my work schedule.

Regardless, I made my usual list of potential Oscar-bait and decided I would commit and go see everything in Tallahassee. I told myself weekend after weekend that I would go have a marathon and see as many movies in one day as I could.

I never did.

Now, the Golden Globes are airing Sunday, and I’ve only seen four (of the 30+) movies nominated under one of the various categories. Normally, I would have seen about half of the movies nominated and several more that got snubbed. I’m pretty disappointed in myself this year, and I’m definitely on a mission to see a few more before Feb. 22.

I’ve asked around a little and learned about the demise of the old movie theater and the forgotten city proposal for a new one. For the most part, people haven’t seen very distraught that there’s no theater here like I am.

I’d like to start a dialogue here. What do you think about Bainbridge not having a movie theater?
