There are two big-time sports moments I want to talk about from the last week.

The first was from Sunday afternoon when 22-year old Mario Götze scored the winning goal against Argentina in the World Cup.

That shot was worthy of a World Cup victory.

If you didn’t watch it, you’ve probably at least heard about it. Götze is trending on Facebook and Twitter, partly due to his clutch moment of victory and partly due to a scandalous picture of him in a bathing suit.

His goal was expertly handled and timed, taking a pass off the chest and netting it in one swift motion. Götze, a substitute, just turned 22 a month ago and is now an icon. I give kudos to Germany for their victory.

And, hey, the U.S. team only lost to them by one point in the last moments of the game, too. The U.S. is on par with Argentina. Is that logical? I’ll say it is, and I’m okay with that.

The second moment came during the MLB Home Run Derby Monday night in Minnesota. Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton sent a ball into orbit during the first round. My jaw dropped when I saw his pure power bang the baseball to the third deck, projected at 465 feet. I encourage anyone interested to find a clip of his first round at-bat. The guy was on fire. Too bad he flubbed in the third round.

If Stanton was swinging an aluminum bat, somebody’s windshield in the parking lot outside the stadium would have been obliterated.

Athletics left fielder Yoenis Cespedes was the real star of the night, though, seizing his second Home Run Derby victory in a row. Ken Griffey, Jr., was the only other player to achieve this in 1998-99.

Chipper Jones tweeted Cespedes would have the first back-to-back-to-back Home Run Derby win ever. I’d say he knows what a good home run hitter looks like.
