Services for Norma Jean Smith Wingate, age 70, will be at 4 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Cox Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Andy Anderson will be officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service, beginning at 3.

Norma Jean Smith Wingate left this world to go to her heavenly home on June 18, 2014. She was born in Akron, Ohio on Sept. 10, 1943, to William and Irene Smith. She graduated from Lordstown High in 1961. Norma Jean played in the orchestra and marching band. She was in the All County Chorus, the Beta Club, Pep Club, and the National Honor Society. Norma took part in junior and senior plays, and the yearly gymnastic program. After graduation, she moved to Palm Harbor, Florida. Norma Jean attended Memorial Hospital’s nurses training in Clearwater, Florida and became an L.P.N., in 1963. In 1962, she married Edwin Wingate. They celebrated almost 46 years of marriage, before he passed away in 2008. She worked at Clearwater Hospital in the Pediatrics Department, the Emergency Room in Tarpon Springs, Florida, Tarpon Springs Convalescent Home, Smirlis Bakery, and Pinewood Nursing Home in Whigham, Georgia. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophesy. There, she had served as Gleaner Leader, in Children’s church, as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, church clerk and church treasurer. Norma loved to crochet. She will be sorely missed by the family and friends she loved so very much.

Mrs. Wingate is survived by her children, Billy Wingate of Bainbridge, Bobby Wingate and wife, Renee of Bainbridge, Crystal Howard of Brinson,  Eddie Wingate and wife, Connie of Bainbridge, and Jessica Roach and husband, Gerard of Bainbridge; 14 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, and 7 sisters-in-law, who were like sisters to her.

Norma Jean Wingate was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her only sibling, Martha Starcher; nephews, Richard Starcher, Terry Michael Combast; and sister-in-law, Janie Hurley.

Cox Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
