A custom knife show and forging demonstration sponsored by the Southern Bladesmiths will be held Saturday, March 22, at the Earle May Boat Basin shelter beginning at 9 a.m.
Local member Robert Stott said although this is the fifth year the show has been held, this is the first time the event has been in Bainbridge. Previously it was held in the Lake Seminole, Donalsonville area.
Those attending will have a chance to see demonstrations of how to make knives. There will also be a competition among the bladesmiths to see who can cut water bottles, ropes and even chopping of 2x4s, all with amazingly sharp knives.
Other demonstrations will include such primitive survival skills as flint knapping (making of arrowheads) and a hands-on demonstration of blacksmithing.
Some collectable pieces will be offered for sale.
Stott said the educational demonstrations and hands on programs are aimed at young people in an effort to keep the arts alive. He added that there has been a huge resurgence in the metal arts in the last few years.
Stott, who was featured in an issue of Rifle and Rod, has long been known for his knife making abilities. He has been a member of this organization for four years. Some of the other area members are Glen Moulton, T. Paul McGowen and Steve Enfinger.
