Congratulations to the Florida State Seminoles and Auburn Tigers. Both gave strong efforts in Monday’s BCS National Championship football game at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif.
The Seminoles pulled out the win on a late touchdown pass from Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston to wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. The most valuable player in the game was Winston, who completed six of seven passes for 77 yards in the Seminoles wining 80-yard drive that culminated in a two-yard scoring pass to Benjamin.
Williams had seven tackles and picked off an interception in the second half.
Running back Tre Mason rushed for 195 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Nick Marshall rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown.
I am a die-hard Seminole fan and I have purchased season tickets at Florida State for more than 30 years.
When I first purchased season tickets, Darrell Mudra was the Seminole’s head coach.
He was the one who reversed the normal in-game relationship between the head coach and his assistant coaches.
Coach Mudra would sit in the press box on game day and call down to his assistants who were on the sideline with headsets.
He said he could get a better view of the game action from the press box, and while that was probably so, I think a head coach needs to be on the sideline with his team.
I also had season tickets during legendary head coach Bobby Bowden’s Seminole career, which included the school’s first two national championships.
Getting back to Winston, he had an outstanding season and deserved the Heisman Trophy, which goes each year to the top college football player in the country.
During the season, there was an allegation that Winston was being investigated in an alleged sexual assault case. The state attorney determined that there was not enough evidence to bring charges against Winston.
I am not accusing him of anything and don’t know if he is guilty of the accusations — but I think that character should be considered in the Heisman Trophy each year.
