College football bowl season has come

The NFL has two weeks left of games and the NBA season is getting rowdy. The Heat vs. Pacers game in Miami Wednesday night was a close one with the Heat rallying at the end for a 97-94 victory. Sports fans are rejoicing. I’m most excited about the college football bowl schedule.

I can’t say how many of the bowl games I’m going to watch. Everything starts Saturday, Dec. 21 and runs almost every day until the big National Championship game on Jan. 6. That’s a lot of football, and a lot of schools that I don’t particularly care about. However, there are a select few matchups that have me intrigued, and an even smaller number of games that will have me glued to the TV.

First is on Dec. 30 when Ole Miss will take on Georgia Tech in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City bowl (that’s a mouthful) in beautiful Nashville, Tenn. As a Georgia Bulldog fan, Tech has always held my interest for rivalry’s sake. You never know who is going to show up to a game, the Tech that can’t keep a team from scoring to save their life, or the Tech that gave the Dawgs a run for their money earlier this month. Heck, look at last year when the Yellow Jackets showed up in flying colors and pristine execution against the USC Trojans. Granted, that was still the dark days of the Kiffin-era.

Then there is Ole Miss, lead by junior quarterback Bo Wallace, who is trying to raise himself to NCAA elite status but not quite winning all the games that count. They beat LSU with a game-winning field goal, though. Both teams look interesting and will be fun to watch.

Next on my list is Duke vs. Texas A&M in the Chick-fil-A bowl in Atlanta. Duke is hot off the heels of their first ever 10-win season. Despite being smashed to blueberry juice by Florida State in the ACC Championship, Duke shouldn’t be underestimated against the 8-4 Texas A&M. Quarterback superstar Johnny Manziel, no matter what you might think of him, has matured and improved his game since this time last year. But if the Aggie defense doesn’t show up, Duke may have an opportunity to run right over them. I wouldn’t count on Manziel too much to minimize the score margin, either.

Then there is Georgia with a bowl rematch against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Bulldogs are in the midst of getting their redshirt junior quarterback Hutson Mason warmed up for next season. Mason has plenty of weapons to choose from, with leg-churning backs and a number of talented passing targets. Nebraska went 8-4 this season, just like the Bulldogs, and are as big a threat as any if Georgia can’t execute on defense like they’ve been known to this season.

Lastly, we have the BCS National Championship game with Auburn vs. Florida State. This matchup has the entire football watching fan base split right down the middle. I flip-flop every day on which I think will take the title. Florida State has the incredible defense that can put a stop Auburn’s running game. It won’t be as easy for Tre Mason to blast through the Seminole’s defense as it was for him to run all over Missouri’s. Jameis Winston also is a big-time playmaker who commands an impressive offense. I’m of the opinion that anything can happen, though. Anyone who doesn’t believe the same thing obviously didn’t watch Auburn’s last two regular season games.
