Jasper DeLaughter (Jack) Gray, Jr., 87, of Bainbridge, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Memorial Hospital.
The graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Oak City Cemetery, with Dr. Gerald A. Little officiating.
Mr. Gray was born Feb. 8, 1925, in Bainbridge, the son of Jasper DeLaughter Gray and Lura Morgan Gray. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1943, and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1950. While at the University of Georgia, he was a member of the golf team and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II on a patrol frigate, the USS Knoxville, and was on many convoys including to Russia, England, and Africa. He worked for the Citizens Bank for several years before moving to Aspen, Colo., where he was a builder and real estate developer. He retired back to Bainbridge in the 1960s, where he was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Bainbridge Country Club.
Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Edna Ellen Gray Conger.
Survivors include his nephews, John Gray Conger of Columbus, Ga., and William Reece Conger of Daphne, Ala.; his great-nieces, Ann Gray Conger of New Orleans, La. and Hannah Reece Conger of Statesboro, Ga.; and a special friend, Frances Lee of Bainbridge.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gordon Miller for his compassionate care throughout the years.
