Michele L. Miller recently announced her plans to run for the Decatur County Board of Education, District 3, seat. That seat is currently held by Winston Rollins.

Miller is currently an instructor of nursing at Darton College, a position she has held since 2010. She earned her associate’s degree of art in nursing from LaGrange College in 1994, and a bachelor’s degree of science in nursing from the University of West Georgia in 2005.

Miller also earned a master’s degree in nursing education from Albany State University in 2008, and is currently working on her doctorate through Valdosta State University.

“I believe all students deserve the best education the public school system can provide,” she said. “It is the job of the school board to make sure that they do everything in their power to make sure the system runs in a manner that will provide this to all students.”

Miller was an LPN program instructor at Bainbridge College from 2004 through 2008, and an RN program instructor at Southwest Georgia Technical College from 2008 through 2010. She has also managed and operated a trucking business and a software company.
“I think I have a lot of experience in both business and working in teaching,” Miller said. “I feel like the school board is like a business in that you must manage both the employees and your customers. The employees are the teachers and staff, and the customers are the parents and students.”

Miller said she would actively work to solve the problems in the schools, and make sure that teachers have the resources they require to meet students’ needs.

“We have to start with realizing what the problems are and work to resolve them at all costs,” she said. “We have to provide the children here in Decatur County with the best education, and to do that, we need the best teachers.

“I have been on the receiving end of furlough days myself, and I am sure there is another way to cut the budget than by adding more furlough days. Furlough days don’t just hurt our teachers, they hurt the education of the children, too.”

Miller is married to her husband Michael, and they regularly attend First Baptist Church of Bainbridge. She has three children, and her mother, Jean Stokes, still lives in Bainbridge.
