Youngsters attending this week’s Bainbridge Leisure Services Department youth baseball camp had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the game from a couple of former outstanding Bainbridge High School Bearcats players.

The instructors were Leisure Services athletic director Stanley Bell, a former Bearcats first-team All-Region 1-AAAA third baseman, and Ron Fowler, a former Bearcats first team All-Region 1-AAAA catcher.

“We just want the youngsters attending our camp to learn the proper positioning and technique of pitching fielding and hitting,” Bell said. “We also might get in a little bit of work on base running.

“We just want them to have some fun while learning the fundamentals of the game.”

“The fundamentals they learn as youths will serve them well as they get into older age group play,” added Fowler.

Leisure Services program director Diane Atkinson says young instructors like Bell and Fowler, who played the game at a high level in high school, are the perfect instructors for the youth campers.

“The campers look up to Stanley and Ron and what they have accomplished,” she said. “The camp will run through Friday and we will have a second camp Monday, July 16, through Friday, July 20.”
“We will also have a couple of youth girls softball camps. The first will be Monday, June 18, through Friday, June 22, and the second will be Monday, July 23, through Friday, July 27.”
