Several soccer players make All-Region teams

Many Bainbridge High School Bearcats and Lady Cats soccer players were prominent on the All-Region 1-AAAA teams, which were released this week by the region coaches.

Bearcats making the first team were sophomore center midfielder Luis Mejia, who had 13 goals and 16 assists; senior defender Villeser Sarmiento; and sophomore goalkeeper Dominique Douglas, who posted six shutouts and allowed one goal or less in 13 of 19 games.

Bearcats making second-team All-Region 1-AAAA were sophomore forward and midfielder Daniel Provence, senior midfielder Joshua Rivera and junior midfielder Carlos Becerra.

Despite having a foot injury, Provence was second on the team with 16 goals and nine assists.

Rivera had eight goals and three assists, and Becerra had four goals and four assists.

The Region 1-AAAA boys player of the year was striker Patrick Braxton of Houston County, who had 23 goals and eight assists. The Region 1-AAAA boys coach of the year was Jason Kirk of Houston County.

Lady Cats senior midfielder Savannah Cook, who made the All-Region 1-AAAA girls first team, led the team in goals with 17 and had four assists, despite playing the majority of the season with an ankle injury.

Making the All-Region 1-AAAA second team was senior midielder and captain Charlton Reynolds, who had 12 goals and eight assists.

Three Lady Cats — junior defender Caitlyn Cato, senior defender Tiffany Hand and freshman forward Jennifer Becerra — were named honorable mention All-Region 1-AAAA.

Cato had six assists, Hand had two goals and one assist and Becerra had 14 goals and eight assists.

The Region 1-AAAA girls player of the year was junior midfielder and forward Carsen Taylor of Lee County, who had 14 goals and 11 assists, and the Region 1-AAAA girls coach of the year was Dave Baltenberger of Lee County.
