Tennis teams are region champs

Coach Amy Thomas’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats and Lady Cats tennis teams are Region 1-AAAA champions.

They captured the titles Thursday as tournament hosts at Bill Reynolds Sports Park Tennis Center.

“I am very proud of both our teams,” Thomas said. “They worked hard and had a really great tournament.

“We will host the first round of the State Class AAAA Tournament here. Our teams, along with second-place Thomas County Central boys and Houston County girls, will be in it. The date and opponents are to be determined.”

In round one Thursday against Houston County, the Bearcats won 4-1. Hema Hasona won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Mitchell Massengill won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Cole Bulger won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Stone Inlow and Nolan Lovering lost 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 1 doubles and Zack Poague and Jack Reynolds won 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

In girls first-round action, the Lady Cats defeated Northside-Warner Robins, 5-0.

Hillary Flournoy won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Kristen Monson won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Anne Reynolds won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Emma Kate Smith and Kelly Brooks won 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and Meredith Conder and Lynsey Waddell won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

In second-round action, the Bearcats defeated Thomas County Central, 5-0 and the Lady Cats defeated Houston County, 3-1.

Boys singles action featured Hasona winning 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1, Massengill winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 and Bulger winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.

Inlow and Lovering won 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 boys doubles and Poague and Reynolds won 6-0, 7-6 at No. 2 boys doubles.

The Lady Cats’ second-round action against Houston County featured Flournoy winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Monson winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Reynolds winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

In doubles, Conder and Waddell won 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. The No. 1 doubles team of Smith and Brooks was pulled off the court because the match was already decided.
