Don’t forget to pay your taxes

While most citizens have “April 15” stuck in their heads as the day that it’s time to pay Uncle Sam, taxpayers are getting a two-day reprieve this year. Usually when April 15 falls on a weekend, the tax deadline day moves ahead to the next Monday. However, Monday, April 16, is Emancipation Day, a holiday in the District of Columbia, and so this year’s tax deadline day is actually Tuesday, April 17.

Regardless, it’s definitely time to take care of those tax forms. However, if you still need extra time to file, you can get a six-month extension. The easiest way, according to the IRS, is online through the “Free File” link on www.irs.gov. Filing this request gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file a return. However, it is an extension of the time to file, not an extension of the time to pay.

To get the extra time to file, taxpayers must estimate their tax liability on Form 4868 and should pay any amount due by the April 17 deadline.

For those who haven’t yet filed, the IRS suggests to use e-file, rather than a printed form.
