Decatur County Public Works Director Dennis Medley said the county recently completed a resurfacing project and is expected to begin another in the coming weeks.

Medley said the county is currently under contract with the State Department of Transportation to complete road resurfacing projects on two county roads. These projects are financed through the Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) program.

He said that recently work was completed on a resurfacing of 5.3 miles on County Line Road (County Road 22). In May, a similar project will begin on 4.0 miles of Green Shade Road.

According to Medley, Oxford Construction Co. — which provides the county with asphalt for road-paving projects — is currently supplying asphalt for a resurfacing project in Seminole County. Once that project is completed, Oxford will be able to supply the asphalt for the Green Shade Road resurfacing.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation website, the LMIG program allows local governments to decide which types of projects would be most beneficial to their jurisdictions. On an annual basis, Georgia DOT notifies local governments to submit requests for their local transportation needs.

Funding for LMIG is allocated each fiscal year and is between 10 and 20 percent of the funding from the state motor fuel taxes collected in the preceding fiscal year. Funds for projects are distributed to local governments by a formula based on population and local road mileage. Funds can be rolled over for three fiscal years to assist with funding more expensive projects.
