Bearcats defeat Trojans, 11-1, in soccer

Freshman forward Emilio Hernandez scored five goals Tuesday night in Quitman, Ga., leading the Bainbridge High School Bearcats to an 11-1 soccer victory over the Brooks County High School Trojans.
Daniel Provence and Louis Mejia also scored multiple goals.
Provence scored three goals, the first in the 34th minute on a pass from Mejia, the second in the 51st minute on a through ball from Mejia and the third in the 57th minute on a pass from Hernandez.
Mejia scored twice. He took a direct kick from Provence in front of the net and scored in the 13th minute and scored in the 61st minute on an assist from Josh Rivera. He also assisted on four goals.
Milo Rivera scored in the 37th minute, after taking a pass from Carlos Becerra.
The Trojans scored their only goal in the 52nd minute, breaking quickly up the middle of the field following a kickoff.
Bainbridge coach Jamie Ard said his team started slowly, but came on strong late.
“We were sluggish out of the gate,” he said. “We missed open players on passes, and we were not sharp with our finishing. I think that that is to be expected since it had been a week since we had played, and we had a long weekend due to the weather threat last Friday.
“At halftime we made some adjustments and talked about looking to make the pass to the open player more quickly.”
Ard said that his team’s second-half play was “beautiful soccer.”
“In the second half, we played the game the way it is intended to be played,” he said. “I saw a glimpse of what I have been waiting to see the whole year.
“We scored more goals in the game than we have all year due to the fact that we played as a team, rather than a bunch of selfish individuals. If we keep playing so unselfishly, we can be scary good.
“As much as I was happy with Emilio Hernandez for scoring the five goals, I was more happy with the way he passed the ball as the game went on. In fact, I was more satisfied with the way we passed and worked together than I was the score line. The goals and the wins will come if we play like we did against Brooks County.”
