Soccer Bearcats defeat Indians, 6-1

Coach Jamie Ard’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats soccer team improved their season record to 6-1, with a 6-1 victory over the Albany High School Indians on Tuesday at Centennial Field.

The Bearcats, who are 1-0 in Region 1-AAAA play, went up 1-0 in the third minute when Louis Mejia placed a ball in the back of the net.

In the 16th minute, Mejia scored again, this time on a penalty kick, to increase the advantage to 2-0.

Joshua Rivera made it 3-0 in the 37th minute when he delivered a hard low shot past the goalkeeper.

The Indians countered with their lone goal in the 41st minute, to cut the lead to 3-1.

Mejia struck again in the 43rd minute, completing his three-goal hat trick with a low shot into the right-hand corner of the net to make it 4-1.

The final two Bearcats goals came in the 52nd and 88th minutes.

They got an own goal in the 52nd minute when an Indians player tried to clear the ball out of the penalty area.

In the 88th minute, Hernandez kicked in a ball that was loose in the penalty area for the final goal.

Ard said he was particularly pleased with the play of Mejia.

“Louis Mejia was one of the few starters who is a consistent goal-scoring threat,” he said.
