Vera Mae Powell Wells

Vera Mae Powell Wells, 91, of Stone Mountain, Ga., passed away on March 3, 2012.  Services for Vera P. Wells will be on Thursday, March 8, 2012, commencing with a visitation at Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m.

Born and raised in Buhl, Ala., Vera Mae was educated in Tuscaloosa County schools. She received her degree of Registered Nurse from South Highlands Infirmary in Birmingham, Ala. Her professional career began as a member of the U.S. Army Nurse Corp, stationed in Bainbridge, Ga. She was previously employed at University Hospital in Birmingham, before beginning a long career at Emory University Hospital, where she served as the head nurse on a medical unit.

Upon retirement she assisted her husband in the operation of his business, C.K. Wells Supply Company. She continued to enjoy her hobbies of fishing, gardening, playing bridge, and spending time with her family. Vera remained very busy with participation in activities at her Park Springs residence, membership in the American Legion Auxillary, and the La Femmes of the 40 and 8.  She was a long-time member of Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church, where she participated in the United Methodist Women and the Joy Sunday School class.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William B. and Virginia Fair Powell; nine siblings; her husband of 64 years, Carle K. Wells; and a grandson, Joel T. Conway, Jr.

Survivors include her children: John and Betty P. Wells of Carrollton, Ga., Betty W. and Roger Daniel of Carrollton; Mary W. and Tom Conway of Bainbridge; and Paul Wells and Mary Young of Decatur, Ga. Additional survivors include her grandchildren and their spouses; two great-grandchildren; sisters in law, nieces and nephews, and special family friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Avondale Pattillo United Methodist Church, 3260 Covington Highway, Decatur, Georgia  30032, or to a favorite charity.
