The Bainbridge High School ninth-grade Bearcats improved their perfect season record to 7-0 Wednesday, with a 55-37 home victory over the Cairo High School ninth-grade Syrupmakers.
Bearcats ninth-grade coach Brandon Ingram was pleased with his team’s performance.
He pointed out that, while they made some turnovers, they also caused their share of turnovers with tough tight defense.
The Bearcats took command early, scoring the first six points of the game. Trey Miller, who took game- scoring honors with 25 points, scored the first four points.
Miller first hit a jumper from the right side just 40 seconds into the game, then he hit a layup off the right glass at the 5:25 mark.
Tyree Crump, the Bearcats’ second-leading scorer, with 10 points, pushed the advantage out to 6-0 with a rebound and stick back at the 4:32 mark.
The Syrupmakers outscored the Bearcats 9-3 the rest of the quarter to pull even 9-9.
The Bearcats built their lead back to six at 19-13, when Miller hit a layup off the right glass with 2:34 left in the second quarter. They were on top 22-18 at halftime.
Tavarious Bowens gave them their first double-digit lead at 31-21 when he laid a layup in off the right glass with 3:15 left in the third quarter.
By the quarter’s end the Bearcats were out front 37-25, and they would not lead by less than double digits the rest of the way.
Behind Miller and Crump in the Bearcats’ scoring column Wednesday were Trey Dudley with seven points, Derrick Jones with five, Tavarious Bowens with four and Henry Kelly and Trey Webb with two apiece.
