Sears Holdings Corporation, which operates Sears and Kmart stores in the United States and Canada, announced Tuesday it is closing more than 100 stores in response to continued losses in its business.

The Bainbridge Sears store is owned by an independent dealer and is not included in the list of closed stores.

The Bainbridge Kmart store closed in May 2010 as part of a number of store closings.

According to a news release, Sears’ annual sales were down 3.3 percent in 2011 and Kmart’s sales were down by 1.8 percent in 2011.

“Given our performance and the difficult economic environment, especially for big-ticket items, we intend to implement a series of actions to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” said Sears Holdings CEO Lou D’Ambrosio. “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail at the store, online and in the home.”
