It’s unconscionable that our county commission will not live up to its contractual obligation with the Humane Society. However, what I found to be the most objectionable was Earl Perry’s comment that the county’s assistance to “GED students (is only) $35,000 a year.”

Question: Why are high school dropouts getting any taxpayer dollars to help them get their GED? Didn’t these folks have the opportunity to take advantage of a taxpayer funded public education?

Mr. Perry states, “I cannot see granting only $35,000 to our students…trying to get their GEDs,” while giving additional funding to animal control. Mr. Perry, I ask you why are the taxpayers giving anything to these dropouts (they ceased being “students” when they quit school) to get their GEDs?

They made a choice to forgo a “free” education when they left high school. Frankly, I think the $35,000 being used to assist them should be diverted to the dogs and cats that have no choice, when their neglectful owners let them run wild or drop them off in the middle of the night at the shelter.

Shame on Mr. Perry and the other commissioners who voted not to do the right thing and live up to the agreement they made with the Humane Society.
