County treasurer special election may be March 6, 2012

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced Thursday morning that the state will hold its presidential preference primary on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. This date will also be when a special election might be held in Decatur County, for its county treasurer position.
Earlier this year, Decatur County Treasurer Claude Shirley resigned and Probate Judge Edwin J. “Chip” Perry III appointed Jerry Maxwell to serve as interim county treasurer. Maxwell will continue to serve, until the March 6, 2012, special election.
However, both Maxwell and Decatur County commissioners have also said there is a possibility the position of county treasurer may be eliminated before that March 6, 2012, election. Only three counties in Georgia still have a county treasurer position; Decatur County has both a county treasurer and a finance director.
Any change to the county treasurer position would have to be first approved by both the Decatur County Board of Commissioners and the General Assembly of the state of Georgia.
