Investigators with the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office are attempting to find out who stole hundreds of cigarette cartons and approximately $35,000, in cash, from a local convenience store on Sunday night.

The burglary was reported Monday morning at Bishop’s Travel Center, located at 7827 Tallahassee Hwy., just north of the Georgia-Florida border.

According to a Sheriff’s Office incident report, employees of the store arrived at about 5 a.m. Monday and reportedly noticed that things looked out of place. They observed that someone had cut a hole in one of the store’s walls and broken into the store’s safe.

A supervisor estimated that approximately 600 to 700 cartons of cigarettes were missing from the store and tens of thousands of dollars were missing from the store’s safe. He said he and another employee had closed the store shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, without noticing anything suspicious.

However, another store employee later told deputies that she and a friend were beaten up by three men outside Bishop’s the previous night. A Gadsden County (Fla.) deputy had responded to the scene after a passer-by reported a prowler outside the store at 10:52 p.m. Sunday.

According to the incident report, the Gadsden County deputy found the employee’s friend at the scene, but the assailants had fled. The deputy took the employee’s friend back to a relative’s house at about 12:30 a.m.

If any citizen has information about who may have committed the burglary, or saw anything suspicious around Bishop’s on Sunday night, they are asked to call the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office at (229) 248-3044.
