A Bainbridge man was arrested after a long, armed standoff with sheriff’s deputies ended peacefully Sunday morning.
Chad Edward Braswell, 40, of Day Road in Brinson, was taken into custody at about 10 a.m. Sunday, after deputies negotiated with him to surrender, Major Wendell Cofer of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office said.
Shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday night, deputies responded to a domestic dispute reported at 733 Day Road. Braswell’s three daughters reportedly told Capt. Pat Trolinger that their father had assaulted their mother and threatened her with a firearm. They stated their father had multiple firearms and threatened to kill himself and others.
The suspect’s brother, Gary, allegedly told deputies that he had tried to get his brother to calm down, only to have Chad point a gun at him at close range and threaten him. Meanwhile, the suspect was holding his wife inside the house and reportedly told a relative, via phone, that he would kill anyone who tried to come inside the house.
Capt. Chip Nix and other members of the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team responded to the scene. Cofer said deputies maintained contact with Braswell through the night until he fell asleep. After waking, Braswell was calmer and turned himself over to deputies, Cofer said.
It was not immediately clear what the nature of the domestic dispute was.
Braswell is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, under the Family Violence Act.
