While there are many activities, events and competitions that 4-H’ers enjoy throughout the school year, summer camp is the one that 4-H’ers anticipate most all school year.

This year’s week of camp proved just to be so.

4-H’ers enjoyed a fun-filled week of Cloverleaf Camp at the Jekyll Island 4-H Center on June 27 to July 1.

Decatur County 4-H was well represented with 15 rising sixth- and seventh-grade 4-H’ers in attendance. Campers took part in exciting hands-on classes, had the opportunity to swim in the ocean and attend Summer Waves Waterpark. Among the instructional classes were herpetology, beach ecology, marsh ecology, seining, and HOP (healthy lifestyles.) 4-H’ers also enjoyed canoeing, biking through the historic district of Jekyll Island, and climbing the lighthouse on St. Simons Island. In addition, campers enjoyed dances and outdoor recreation as well as a talent show.

Decatur County 4-H’er Mattie Winburn was the winner of the talent show.

Lindsey Hayes and Mitchell May were the adults that accompanied the Decatur County 4-H’ers along with teen-leader Alexandra McLendon.

Bethanie Robinson, a rising eighth-grade 4-H’er, attended Junior Camp at Camp Fortson, near Hampton, Ga., on May 30 to June 3. Bethanie attended with other 4-H’ers from across the Southwest District. During the exciting week of Junior Camp, students attended White Water Waterpark, Stone Mountain and Thursday Night Thunder at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Alexandra McLendon represented Decatur County at Senior 4-H Camp on July 4 to July 8 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center. Senior Camp is open to rising ninth- to 12th-grade 4-H’ers. Campers traveled to Athens, Ga., to tour the University of Georgia campus, visited Milledgeville, and viewed a spectacular fireworks show. Students also participated in ropes course, leadership activities and team-building events.
