Funeral services for Alto Screen, 95, were held Sunday, June 19, at Morning Star M.B. Church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Nathan Reed officiating.

Interment was at Mount Olive Cemetery with Antwan Hicks, Jarvis Jones, Arthur Fambro, Rodrick Johnson, Irvin Baulkman and Robert Screen acting as pallbearers.

Mrs. Screen was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Bainbridge and died June 11, 2011, in Miami Fla. She left Georgia at age 17 and worked as a licensed practical nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital after obtaining her education at Lindsey-Hopkins School of Nursing. In 1953, she obtained taxi certificates and as an entrepreneur operated Harlem Cabs, Liberty City Jitneys and a private limousine service. She was the first woman to operate a Pure and Citgo Service Station. In 1968, she returned to nursing at Miami Jewish Hospital for the Aged until 1985, when she retired.

She was preceded in death by Dozier Hicks, father of her children, Reginald Dozier Hicks, (also deceased), and Roslyn Alberta Hicks Jones; and by Anderson Johnson, father of her youngest son Roderick.

Survivors include a daughter, Roslyn A. Jones; a son, Roderick Johnson; a sister, Evelyn Screen; a brother, Winifred Screen; four grandsons, one great-granddaughter, and a host of other God-children, relatives and friends.
