Funeral services for Claude DeFoist “Dee” Hancock, 76, of Cairo, Ga., were held Tuesday, April 26, at the First Baptist Church in Cairo with Drs. Ron McCaskill and Joe Allen officiating.

Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo. Active pallbearers were his nephews, Don Hancock, Keith Hancock, Wayne Hancock, Steve Hancock, Michael Hancock, Andy Barrineau and Gary Hancock.

Mr. Hancock was born on July 28, 1934, in Thomasville, Ga. He died on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville.

He served his country in the U.S. Army. On Nov. 18, 1956, he married Beth Shiver Hancock at the First Baptist Church of Cairo. Before his retirement, he was employed with Colonial Bread Company, D&L Diesel and was self-employed as a cabinet builder. He was a devoted community volunteer, having received the Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1997. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Cairo and loved spending time with his family, being outdoors and working with wood.

Mr. Hancock was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Rosa Hancock; his sister, Kathy Scott; his sister-in-law, Mattie Hancock; and his nephew, Tony Barrineau.

He is survived by his wife, Beth Shiver Hancock of Cairo; daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Sammy Perkins and Deena and John Harrell, all of Whigham; grandchildren, Douglas Harrell of Whigham, Lafe Perkins of Athens, Ga., and Samantha Perkins of Valdosta, Ga.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Jackie Hancock of Tallahassee, Fla., Bobby and Joyce Hancock of Cairo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Wendell Barrineau of Whigham, and Janice and Pope Mobley of Whigham; mother-in-law, Lucille G. Shiver of Cairo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cairo First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1538, Cairo, GA 39828 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1201 Albany, GA 31702.

Clark Funeral Home of Cairo was in charge of the arrangements.
