A memorial service for Betty Shellman Shaw, 64, of Augusta, Ga., was held Monday, April 11, in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son in Augusta, Ga., with the Rev. Perry Shelfer officiating.

Born Jan. 24, 1947, in Columbus, Ga., Mrs. Shaw died Friday, April 8, 2011, at MCG Hospital and Clinics in Augusta.

Having spent most of her young life in Bainbridge, Betty graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1965 and married her high school sweetheart, Dwain, in 1968. She was a 1972 graduate from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s in education. Betty was a military wife who taught special education in Texas, Virginia and Georgia. She was a member of Martinez United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school as well. Mrs. Shaw was a great Georgia Bulldog fan, loved to fish, was a lover of animals but mostly loved spending time with her grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence D. Shellman.

Surviving family members in addition to her husband include a daughter, Jennifer Shaw Knight, and her husband, Travis; grandsons, Shaw Knight and Cody Knight; mother, Ruthie Torpy; and sister, Patricia Tharin.
