The Hardaway High School Golden Hawks from Columbus took a big lead in the second inning here Friday and went on to shut out the Bainbridge High School Bearcats 12-0.

BHS’ highlights in the losing effort against Hardaway were two good defensive plays by catcher Drew Kelley.

Hardaway catcher Josh Anthony drew a walk to open the top of the first but was thrown out by Kelley attempting to steal second.

Hardaway shortstop Devon Jackson followed with a ground single to right. After pitcher David Williams walked to move Jackson up to second, designated hitter Tyler Dukes flied out to Stephen Lightfoot in deep center field. Jackson tagged up and went to third on the play.

With runners on first and third and two outs, a ball got slightly behind Kelley. He pounced on it and threw to the plate, nailing Jackson for the third out.

Hardaway’s big scoring inning was the top of the second when they rallied for six runs.

The Golden Hawks scored their final two runs in the top of the fifth.

Bearcats shut out Pirates 15-0

The Bainbridge High School Bearcats came up with four runs in the top of the first inning Monday in Colquitt and went on to post a 15-0 victory over the Miller County High School Pirates.

Third baseman Steven Bench drew a walk to open the inning and stole second. With one away, third baseman Blake Voyles and catcher Drew Kelley drew consecutive walks to load the bases.

Right fielder Greg Lee followed with a single, driving in Bench and Voyles. A fielder’s choice got Kelley home with the third run and Lee scored the fourth run on an error.

The advantage moved to 7-0 in the second inning when shortstop Ryan Wade, who tripled, Bench, who singled, and Voyles, who singled and stole a base, all came around to score.

A two-run double by Voyles highlighted a three run Bearcats third inning rally.

The Bearcats completed their scoring with four runs in the top of the fourth. Lee led off the inning with a single and moved up to second on a passed ball.

Designated hitter Brandon Bates followed with a single to drive in Lee.

Also scoring in the inning were center fielder Stephen Lightfoot, left fielder Trevor Watts and shortstop Ryan Wade, who all walked.

The Bearcats return to action Friday when they host the Northside Columbus High School Patriots in a Region 1AAAA game at Bearcat Field.
